STEPS provides information on public health research in Europe. It is of use to commissioners (funders and policy-makers), providers (researchers and research organisations), and users (practitioners and officials).
Public health research is medical research at population and organisational level, complementing clinical research on patients and biomedical research in laboratories. It creates the evidence base for policy and practice in the prevention of disease, promotion of health, and administration of systems and services for healthcare.
What is STEPS?
STEPS has been supported by the European Commission Directorate for Research and Innovation’s Science in Society programme, with activities to
- identify and help civil society organizations’ (CSO) engage with public health research
- hold promote interest in public health research in the EU 12 new member states through workshops with CSOs, researchers and ministries
- map health research systems across European countries
- develop European interest through dissemination and network-building.
STEPS was completed in June 2011, and the project technical and administrative reports were submitted to the European Commission DG Research and Innovation (Science in Society) in September 2011. The Technical Report was accepted in November 2011.
Work from STEPS is being continued in PHIRE (Public Health Innovation and Research in Europe).
